Hub for Partner Agencies

Hub for Partner Agencies

We don’t work in isolation.  St Petrock’s is a hub for drop-in services allowing clients access to specialist services such as drug and alcohol, mental health, accommodation providers, employment and outreach healthcare at regular morning sessions.  Agencies providing drop-ins include Addaction, the Clock Tower Surgery, the Street Homeless Outreach Team, and YMCA Job Club.  We also work closely with Exeter City Council’s Housing team, Probation, Police and HM Prison Service.

The support of the Royal British Legion in providing us with funding and training to work with ex-servicemen, as well as providing emergency accommodation, can make all the difference in the world to this vulnerable group.  Some 8% of our clients are ex-servicemen and the RBL’s vital support in time of crisis can help restore much needed hope and trust.

Prevention

Prevention

In addition to our resettlement work in HMP Exeter, our prevention and information work is an important part of our service portfolio.

We have developed a Schools Programme, specifically for secondary schools, which includes a 5 lesson scheme-of-work, resources and a DVD all mapped to the Citizenship and PSHE curricula, which is free of charge.
We also go into primary/secondary schools, colleges, community groups, churches and Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) across Devon and give talks around the issues of homelessness and our work.

We believe that it is important that we provide people with this awareness and provide the information that they may need to help reduce the likelihood that they may fall into the trap of homelessness.  As with our Schools Programme, our talks also aim to help overcome prejudice and stereotyping toward people who are homeless.

Keyworking/Training

Keyworking/Training

Each regular client will spend time with a project worker to identify which support options are best for their individual needs. As the first point of contact for people who are homeless in Exeter, we are uniquely placed to help and have well-established links to all the relevant agencies.  However, it can take time, skill and patience to build trust and a full picture of a client’s situation.  Once a plan is agreed, project staff provide on-going support to enable clients to meet each step on the plan.

Many of the clients we work with will have become socially excluded and many have complex or overlapping needs, such as mental or emotional health issues, addictions or a learning or physical disability.  Engagement with clients through key working and training in Life Skills are vital and crucial aspects of our work which help clients make positive changes in their lives.

Lack of accommodation and lack of education are common threads and we seek to address this by offering Basic Skills classes.

Rent & Support Service

Rent & Support Service

This new project, funded by Crisis, allows us to develop access to private rented sector accommodation in the area for those in housing need, in order to create and maintain sustainable tenancies.  The service is available to clients who are not eligible for social housing and who may be on low income or in receipt of Benefits.  We act as a broker between our clients and local landlords and provide support and advice for both.  The service acts as a guarantor to reduce the financial risk to landlords, supports clients in enabling them to create a manageable home and connects new tenants with local support services.  More details can be found in our Rent & Support Service brochure. Please click here.

Prison Resettlement/PORCH Project

Prison Resettlement/PORCH Project

In addition to our work in St Petrock’s, our Prison team provide housing interventions in the custody process and resettlement at HMP Exeter.  In 2009/10, a total of 718 offenders were referred to this service and 439 were supported in accommodation directly from Exeter Prison.  The remainder were transferred or released from court.  In partnership with HMP Exeter, our staff provide housing advice, as part of a pre-release programme, to explore a multitude of issues relevant to leaving prison.

In 2010, we took over the PORCH Project, which aims to reduce re-offending and contribute to safer communities by providing sustainable accommodation and support to prolific and persistent offenders.  The dictionary definition of ‘porch’ is a ‘sheltered entrance’ and this is exactly what we seek to provide to offenders returning to the area from prisons with an intensive package of support and assistance in partnership with colleagues from the Police, Probation and Health.

Referrals come from a variety of sources including prisons, drug treatment agencies, as well as the Police and Probation.  This service is available to men and women offenders over the age of 18, who live in Exeter, East and Mid Devon. or are returning to these areas from prison.

How We Are Funded

How We Are Funded

It cost £329,106 to run St Petrock’s in 2009/10.  33% of our income was funded by trusts and foundations, 30% by the local community, 11% from HM Prison Service, 4% from the local authority, 4% by NHS Devon and 18% by the Big Lottery.

92% of our income was spent directly on delivering services.

Funding will remain a significant challenge for us. We will seek funding for specific aspects of our work so that we are not reliant on a single funder and are fortunate to have a large number of supporters in the local community who continue to support our work.

Click here for a list of our funders.
